A Brief Introduction
Mackay and Sarina Presbyterian Church is located in the major regional city of Mackay in the heart of Queensland, on the coast, near the beautiful Whitsunday Islands.
We are part of the Presbyterian Church of Queensland in the Presbytery of Central Queensland. As the name suggests, the Mackay Charge has two preaching places – “Scots” North Mackay and Sarina Presbyterian Church. Our vision statement reads that we are “a friendly people sharing the love of God with a needy world.” As such we minister to people of all age groups and backgrounds and feel a burden to reach out to our community with the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Come and visit us. You will be welcomed into a very warm and friendly family of God.
A Brief History of the Presbyterian Church in the Mackay Region
There has been a Presbyterian Church in Mackay for over 120 years. With the formation of the Uniting Church of Australia in 1977, those who chose to remain as Presbyterians received the land and the building where we are now located. It is from there that we continue the work and ministry of the Presbyterian Church in Mackay.
The property has been added to and re-furbished over the years to meet the needs of the congregation. In 1986, land was purchased on Beach Road Sarina and, in 1987, an old school building was relocated to the site and refurbished to become Sarina Presbyterian Church. Sarina is a friendly and growing community church.
Who goes to Church these days?
Our Church Family in both preaching places are made up of a wide variety of people from all social, ethnic and economic backgrounds, with a spread of ages to match. There are many Bible Study groups including a Young Adults group, a growing youth group that meets every week and a Sunday School in each preaching place.
Many of our Church Family members meet at various times and we have a Pastoral Care Team which regularly visit those who are infirmed, in hospitals and at home. Our Mission Awareness Group meets regularly to pray for the missionaries we support at home and abroad, and pass on regular updates for us all about those we support. We can really say that God has blessed us with a Church Family that reflects all areas of the society in which we live.
Of course, there’s always room for you and you are welcome to come along!
We are committed to serving God in accordance with the teaching of the bible.
We believe this is possible through the prayerful and systematic teaching of Scripture: formally through worship services and informally through personal and group bible study.
We expect to see God working through us in fellowship, practical care, hospitality, nurturing and encouragement across the broad range of ages, backgrounds and interests of our congregation.
On a firm foundation of prayer, teaching and fellowship we will share the love of God to a needy world.
